It’s APRIL SECOND and we have a shit-pile of snow so high in Winnipeg, you’d swear it’s February.  The poor geese have decided to make the trudge back to Bumfuck North as they usually do this time of year and I swear to God they seem as confused as we do by our ‘global warming’ situation here in Winnipeg.

Yesterday, I was driving around and there were 2 geese happier than pigs in shit bathing in road-water-slush-salt-filth like they’d found the fountain of fucking life.  It was amusing… they were splashing around like a fat kid in a chocolate bath and they had the nerve to look at ME like I was the one that was stupid.

Truth be told, I can’t really fault ‘em.  They found the only standing water accessible in this province right now so who knows, maybe they one-upped the other 14 million canadian geese trying to swim on frozen ponds and bath in dirty snow piles.  At least they found liquid, right?

Good for them.

This past Saturday (March 28) was the annual ‘Slushfest’ held at my ‘beach’.  Typically, Slushfest involves a few inches of slush on the 3 feet of ice that we call our lake this time of year.  Not so much this past weekend… you could hold a hockey tournament on the lake in the state it was in still. 

Regardless, we (my buddy Los and I) made the trek out there so I decided to gear up and give it a shot in what turned out to be a decent 10-12 knot off-shore wind. 

‘Fuck me..’ is all I heard from Los just after my heart started racin’ from the adrenaline knowing I was about to hit the lake ‘… I forgot my fucking boots…’

Los being the trooper he is (not to mention the fact we drove an hour out of the city) decided to tighten his regular boots and give it a shot.

After some time getting ready and a 10 minute trek about 100 yards off shore to find some wind out of the wind shadow, I was able to launch and was on my way. 

Holy. Shit.  Kiting on black ice more or less sucks.  Pretty scary stuff but after a few minutes I sort of figured out how to treat my (poor) snowboard like a cock-eyed skate and was able to get upwind.  Further onto the lake I was able to find drifts so… 15 feet of ice… 15 feet of snow.  I guess not bad, coulda been worse - like no wind.

I looked back about 5 minutes into my journey and Los had already called ‘er quits.  I don’t blame him, I woulda done the same with regular boots.  On my gaze back to shore I also realized about 20 more kiters had decided to make it out for the event.  Was pretty sweet cruisin’ along the tundra and seeing on average 15-20 kites in the air ahead of me.

All in all, I was able to get about an hour and half in of relatively enjoyable kiting in.  Landed 3-4 jumps after up-talking myself to try to jump knowing I was going to bruise myself landing on solid ice.  So after all was said and done, I would say it was a good day… decent session, learned how to ’skate’ on my snowboard, a few successful jumps and a decent little black bruise on my left ass cheek which looks like I shit my pants and it got stuck to my butt… well worth it.

Oh, and don’t forget the Brahma’s in the intense Manitoba sun standing on 2 feet of ice where the second sandbar usually is chatting with Lloyd and Dale (my neighbors) about their winters in St. Lucia… all of us absorbing the stories knowing full well summer was going to treat us well in just a few short weeks.  Classic.

Saturday was a success.. If not for any other reason than that was my first snowkiting experience on a lake I have some of my fondest memories as far back as I can remember… chalk another great memory/life experience up to Lake Manitoba.

On a side note, Dale and Lloyd were telling us how they met the best kiteboarder they’ve ever seen in St. Lucia.  They said he was so good he looked like a ‘pretty balerina’… shit, I hope I NEVER get good at kiteboarding cuz the last thing I want to look like is a ‘pretty balerina’… peace.

The Stupid Six

And now for a bit of an explanation because my artwork is so fucking profound (left to right):

1. Sean Henderson.  My best man and bro-in-law.  Sean thinks he has big biceps (noted in the image) and goes to the gym alot.  He also ‘twitters’ about his workouts to the dismay of many of his friends.  This is why Sean is yelling ‘gym’.
2. Chris Quigley.  Chris has blonde hair.  Chris also gets his hair cut like a tweenage anime character which is why his hair is so stellar in the pic.  He is also perpetually upset.  This is why Chris is yelling ‘angry’ and has a grumpy-face.
3. Christian Marner.  Christian sells hot tubs… and tries to sell them to us all the time.  ALL THE TIME. ’Nuf said.
4. Brandon Boone.  Boone is as white as it gets but sometimes seems to be racially confused.  We’ll chalk it up to gansta rap penetrating the whitey ‘burbs.
5. Peter Carlier.  Pete’s short.  And English (as in from England).  So he’s standing on a chair yelling the only word English people seem to know how to say.
6. Joel Parent. Joel is built like a brick shithouse.  Or an inverted pyramid.  He works out and his shoulders grow and his waste shrinks.  It’s funny cuz none of his clothes fit anymore.  Joel is our upside-down triangle.

And that would be it for my first MSN Sketches, yo.  Upcoming sketches will not have as detailed of an explanation but I’m hoping doing google searches for my groomsmen’s names will bring people here eventually to see them in all their glory.
